ÕËé¶âÆÁé Õ3ÕðÆà ÁËÕÃê¯ 2020 - ÞñÕÆÁ»
The 3rd Annual Canadian Concrete Expo was held January 22 & 23 at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont. If you are wondering why a publi- cation serving the South Asian trucking community would highlight this expo- sition of an industry not immediately related to “what we do”, you need not look further than the fact that Mack, Kenworth, Peterbilt and Freightliner were well represented with the best examples of the vocational trucks they currently have on offer.
This writer grew up in St. Catharines, Ont., where concrete was brought to jobsites in mixers mounted on the iconic Mack B series trucks, later replaced by the Mack R series. There were of course Ford 9000 “Louisville” mixers and dump trucks, but the Macks stood out
due to their distinctive look and the fact that this was the model of choice of the ready mix com- panies operating in the Niagara Peninsula.
Today’s trucks are so much larg- er than those of the past and the safety features and driver ame- nities so much better than what could have been imagined in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Putzmeister, the German
concrete pump manufacturer,
showed off the largest concrete
pumping rig ever imported into
Canada from their factory in Wisconsin, USA. This particular vehicle incorporated a purpose built Mack cab over chassis, over 60 feet long with steerable rear drive axles and a pumping capacity of almost 200 feet. The vehicle was headed to Quebec where it took the manufacturer nearly two years of effort to get it certified for use in that province.
As more and more of these vehicles enter the vocational mar- ket, so too does the need for more professional drivers to be able to drive and operate these massive machines in highly congest- ed urban areas where they are most often put to use.
The 2020 Truck World Show coming in April to the International Centre will be our next opportunity to see these magnificent machines on display.
